Owning my responsibility to raise awareness of this formidable brick, and having had a better chance to sample its contents, I can unreservedly say that it won't waste readers' time -- there's much well-written stuff of interest to any jazz lover. So I'm re-plugging it a couple of months after publication.
Here you have 'em, all in one place, 90 select articles and photos from one of the best centuries you've experienced, by members of the Jazz Journalists Association, including Greg Burk. All proceeds go to the JJA and its singular mission to advance America's indigenous art form. Available here and wherever subversive documents are hidden.
So far I've dug Bill Milkowski on John Zorn, Matty Bannond on Zoh Amba, Rick Mitchell on Kendrick Scott, and Nate Chinen's thorough evaluation of Sun Ra's influence. Looking forward to Deanna Witkowski on Mary Lou Williams, James Hale on Andrew Hill, and Suzanne Lorge on Carla Bley, among others. It's 500-plus pages. If you don't like it, I'll pay you back.
