King Oji of L.A.'s First Church of Rasta has described dub as the jazz wing of reggae. So it's strange that more dubbers have not availed themselves of the rich possibilities available in jazz recordings -- outside of club DJs, anyway. San Diego saxist Jason Robinson's acquaintance with Marcus Urani of the California reggae band Groundation led Urani to recognize potential dub material in "Ancestral Numbers," the title track from Robinson's current recording with trombonist Michael Dessen, pianist Joshua White, bassist Drew Gress and drummer Ches Smith. It's 7 minutes of fantastical trippery, true to the musicians' feel but a Cre-a-tion all its own. Check it out.
